The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Dallas Gant at pick 245 regardless, 75 picks early.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jones. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 41st pick with a little surplus value in Jordan Morgan. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Junior Colson in pick 58 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where Renardo Green graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Dadrion Taylor-Demerson while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in No. 126, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Javon Foster in pick No. 138 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Jaylin Simpson still on the board at slot 162. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Matt Goncalves at pick 169 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Cody Schrader at Round 6, Pick 27 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nathaniel Watson at No. 219 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bub Means. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dallas Gant in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They will replay Trente Jones at the 255th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
