Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. DJ James, the No. 53 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 119th pick. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Gant pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. With quarterback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Javon Bullard at the 41st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Junior Colson at pick No. 47, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in the 58th pick, with T'Vondre Sweat worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Payton Wilson adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
They let Jaylen Wright come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 15. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and tight end to take Renardo Green, a safety that was not the priority.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson with quarterback and tight end unsolved.
Nice patience on Khyree Jackson, who had no business lasting to pick 107. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 119 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Beaux Limmer in the 126th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Trevor Keegan all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Braiden McGregor in the 195th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trente Jones in slot 202. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nathaniel Watson in pick 219 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
By-the-book stuff, Bub Means at pick No. 245 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Dallas Gant in Round 7, Pick 35 says they were not listening. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
