Nobody had Dallas Gant this high, and it is not close. The Packers reached 66 spots to get him at the 255th pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Landing Devonshire that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Packers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Sedrick Van Pran at the 62nd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Jaden Hicks in No. 88, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 91 with a little surplus value in Dominick Puni. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ben Sinnott at the 126th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Tykee Smith, a safety that was not the priority.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanor Bortolini. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jase McClellan at Round 6, Pick 27 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Edefuan Ulofoshio in No. 218, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They robbed the room for M.J. Devonshire here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Bub Means at pick 245, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Dallas Gant at slot 255, and the board is aghast. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
