Somebody in slot 203 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 162 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The cost of the Smith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
So much rides on Taliese Fuaga that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Quinyon Mitchell at the Round 2 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Nubin at slot 56 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 2, Pick 25 on Maason Smith with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Junior Colson slipping to pick 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Christian Haynes at the 91st pick is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Tommy Eichenberg in No. 125 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 135 on Malik Mustapha, a safety they were not short of.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Chau Smith-Wade in the 203rd pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Gabe Hall slid further than he should have, and pick 217 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Eguakun in pick No. 219, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Fair-plus on Joshua Cephus, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
