The Packers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cody Schrader, the No. 174 name on the board, in the Round 6 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still on the board. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. Their trades came out a wash either way.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill hitter at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Troy Fautanu at the 41st pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Denzel Burke at No. 57 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in Round 2, Pick 27, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in pick 92 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Kris Abrams-Draine slipping to the 135th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Cody Schrader all the way to slot 203, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Josh Proctor in pick No. 217. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Nice patience on Aki Ogunbiyi, who had no business lasting to pick No. 219. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Fair-plus on Sheridan Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
