Priorities are a choice, and the Packers made a strange one, taking Payton Wilson at linebacker in pick 58 with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots crying out for the pick instead. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Graham Barton in pick No. 28 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 19, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Payton Wilson in the Round 2 slot leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
A quiet steal in No. 84: Max Melton for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 88th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Braelon Allen at slot 90 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Maason Smith well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
