There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Khristian Boyd a full 87 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Bertrand at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in Round 2, Pick 9, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Edgerrin Cooper was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board had cheaper options than Cole Bishop at the 88th overall pick, and it noticed. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A wild overpay on Khristian Boyd in pick No. 91, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Roger Rosengarten in No. 126 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Luke McCaffrey at No. 128, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dylan Laube in Round 4, Pick 34, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kamal Hadden well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Trente Jones in slot 169 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Trey Taylor at pick No. 202, and the board is aghast. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They jumped the gun on Cedric Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steal is underselling it; JD Bertrand at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Decamerion Richardson at pick 255 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
