There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Carson Steele a full 121 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Oladapo steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
If Graham Barton and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 26 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid a round early for Cole Bishop in the 91st pick, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trevin Wallace. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Khristian Boyd at pick 126 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Luke McCaffrey at the 128th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Kitan Oladapo in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
By-the-book stuff, Braiden McGregor at the 169th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Garret Greenfield in Round 6, Pick 17 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Carson Steele in No. 202 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Decamerion Richardson at pick 212 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Frank Crum at the 219th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Jack Westover in pick No. 235 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kedon Slovis in slot 245, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Ryan Watts at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
