When the story of this class is written, it opens with J.J. Weaver at Round 7, Pick 31, a reach of 60 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Mustapha at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get an island corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Javon Bullard at slot 41 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in the 58th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 25, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Zak Zinter at pick 91 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ainias Smith in the 127th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Malik Mustapha at the Round 5 slot is the proof. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Jaylan Ford slipping to pick 204 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A conviction pick on Frank Gore Jr. at Round 6, Pick 41 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Evan Williams. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for J.J. Weaver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
