The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jaylin Simpson, Round 5, Pick 33, roughly 32 picks past where he belonged. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The Spann-Ford pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Packers indulged a want in Eichenberg while a need in quarterback and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They liked Kris Jenkins enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 9. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Christian Haynes in the 58th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They took Dominick Puni at par in the 88th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cedric Gray at pick No. 91 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Tommy Eichenberg in pick 126 leaves quarterback and interior defensive lineman for later.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 169 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kendall Milton at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brevyn Spann-Ford this early at No. 219. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Bub Means went about where he belonged in pick No. 245. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Josh Proctor is a better player than slot 255 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
