There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Packers started one anyway for Sam Hartman, 32 picks ahead of schedule. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 58, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A straight-up fair deal on Bucky Irving at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Zak Zinter a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 127 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaheim Bell at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 204th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Barrett at pick 216 squarely in line with his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Jordan Whittington at Round 7, Pick 23 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sam Hartman in slot 251 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
