Start where it matters. The Packers took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Pearl falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Every board in the league had Proctor lower, and that gap is the story. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a long-term answer under center at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan at slot 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Payton Wilson at pick 58 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let a cornerback like DJ James reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kris Abrams-Draine at pick No. 91 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Caelen Carson at Round 4, Pick 26 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: James Williams still on the board at the 169th overall pick. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Evan Williams in No. 202 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They reached a country mile for Josh Proctor at pick No. 219, and the board is aghast. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 245th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Julian Pearl in slot 255 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
