You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Luke McCaffrey in slot 122.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Spending an early pick on safety with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Rice steal is the beam this whole class leans on. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Hit on T.J. Tampa and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a potential shutdown corner, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
They reached a country mile for Kamren Kinchens at the Round 2 slot, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board had cheaper options than Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 49, and it noticed. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Max Melton at pick No. 58, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of pick 88. Tight end and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a safety in Cole Bishop did not.
A big swing on Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 27, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Christian Mahogany at slot 91 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman to take Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker that was not the priority.
A slide stopped in No. 114, with Brenden Rice worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Luke McCaffrey at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach on Cedric Johnson in pick No. 204; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Sam Hartman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
