There is reaching, and then there is Jordan Strachan at the 240th pick. The Packers jumped the board by 102 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
Davis at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Packers indulged a want in Williams while a need in edge rusher and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Graham Barton at the 49th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A slide stopped in the 62nd overall pick, with Junior Colson worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Ricky Pearsall in pick No. 76, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kamren Kinchens in pick 91 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Kiran Amegadjie in slot 104 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Dominick Puni in Round 4, Pick 13 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Khyree Jackson all the way to slot 115, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: James Williams adds a linebacker while edge rusher and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Johnny Wilson in the 126th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Isaac Guerendo at the 136th pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Travis in pick No. 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Marist Liufau at pick 166 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Joe Milton III at No. 169 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Isaiah Davis here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nathaniel Watson in slot 207 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Ro Torrence at the 219th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Jordan Strachan at the 240th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 245 is the definition of value, full stop. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They talked themselves into Isaac Rex at No. 255, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
