The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 52 spots for Frank Crum, and value like that does not grow back.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Melton. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 26 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
A tidy little value on Adonai Mitchell in the 36th pick, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Christian Haynes at pick 58 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Maason Smith at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Cole Bishop went about where he belonged in pick No. 91. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had cheaper options than Braelon Allen at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dominique Hampton in the 169th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Crum in Round 6, Pick 27, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Bub Means at slot 219 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
