You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Darius Muasau in pick 243. A F, plain and simple.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Gray pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. That Coleman pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in No. 41. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Max Melton at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 72 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Williams this early at the 88th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cedric Gray adds a linebacker and leaves tight end untouched.
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 12, with Zak Zinter worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Isaiah Adams at the 114th pick that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Johnny Wilson at slot 127 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Tahj Washington in pick No. 167, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dillon Johnson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joe Milton III in pick 192 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Tanor Bortolini in No. 204, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Myles Murphy in slot 216; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Muasau well ahead of where he belonged. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
LaDarius Henderson at the 251st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
