The rest of the league will want that one back. Jaylin Simpson tumbling to the Packers in pick No. 169 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They will need Jefferson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid a round early for Kris Jenkins in pick No. 41, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Trey Benson in pick 68 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at the 100th pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Christian Jones in the 126th overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Johnny Wilson is a better player than slot 139 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jordan Jefferson at Round 5, Pick 16 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Jaylin Simpson at No. 169 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Cornelius Johnson in the 193rd pick, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Kamal Hadden was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 27, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick 219 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Caedan Wallace in pick No. 245 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nice patience on Josh Proctor, who had no business lasting to slot 255. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
