The phones were a trap the Packers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Put together, it is a D-.
They will need Carlies to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
Getting Beebe where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 27 they get a disruptive interior force, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Fair-plus on Jackson Powers-Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Khyree Jackson at pick No. 88 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Cooper Beebe higher than the 91st pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 125th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots to take Cedric Gray, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Jase McClellan at the 203rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Taulia Tagovailoa in No. 217; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Daequan Hardy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylon Carlies. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
