The curious call sets the tone. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still glaring, the Packers used Round 4, Pick 35 on James Williams, a safety they were not exactly short of.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On value alone, Arnold makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Amarius Mims in the 35th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They went early on Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Terrion Arnold slid further than he should have, and slot 43 is lovely value for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Rod Moore at pick No. 75 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Christian Mahogany at the 82nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 111 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
