The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Chris Paul Jr., the No. 113 name on the board, sitting there at the 196th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will need Morrison to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd overall pick they get a sticky cover corner, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
They jumped the gun on Jalen Royals, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jermari Harris. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Rylie Mills a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Chris Paul Jr. was still sitting there in pick No. 196, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach the 237th pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Julian Fleming at Round 7, Pick 34, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
