The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Sam Hartman, taking him 39 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Eichenberg is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Denzel Burke in pick 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 43 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Fair-plus on Blake Corum, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Roman Wilson at the 82nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Tommy Eichenberg at linebacker with tight end and interior defensive lineman open.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went TE-EDGE with Cade Stover while clear needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman sat open.
A wild overpay on Dominic Lovett in pick 187, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sam Hartman this early at the 217th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kaimon Rucker at slot 219 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zy Alexander at the 230th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
