There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Kyle Hergel, 92 picks ahead of schedule. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Landing Williams that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
DeWayne Carter at pick No. 65 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Jamari Thrash went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 32. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ainias Smith at slot 142 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Josh Newton in the 159th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
James Williams in pick 173 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kyle Hergel at the 252nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
