The Chiefs did not so much draft Zak Zinter as overpay for him, 33 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
In pick 32 they get a blindside protector at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 55
A slide stopped in the 64th pick, with Malachi Corley worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 107
Zak Zinter at slot 74 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 124
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in No. 95 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 162
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at the 159th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 175
A straight-up fair deal on Cody Schrader at Round 5, Pick 37, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
