This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Josh Newton, the No. 58 name on the board, stolen at pick 88. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging. The cost of the Allen reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. More want than need.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Troy Franklin in slot 41. A need, and now a little less of one.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Bullard adds a safety and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
Steal is underselling it; Josh Newton at No. 88 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Cooper Beebe in pick 92, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 125 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cam Hart in the 135th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They liked Jontrey Hunter enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 203. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
J.J. Weaver in the 217th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Daequan Hardy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 246, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
