There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Fentrell Cypress II, 62 picks ahead of schedule. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Odunze steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Somehow Rome Odunze was still sitting there in pick 35, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Patrick Paul slipping to the 67th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Dominick Puni slid further than he should have, and the 103rd overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They jumped the gun on Jason Marshall Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick No. 181, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fentrell Cypress II in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
