After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Williams. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Jones left real value on the table behind him.
Bottom line, with Jayden Daniels leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get their guy under center for the next decade, and a steal at that.
Nothing to complain about; Adonai Mitchell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Ricky Pearsall in the 68th pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Johnny Wilson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Matt Goncalves at pick 103 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They took DJ James at par in the 115th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Cam Hart at Round 5, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Jaheim Bell at pick No. 144 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Christian Jones at pick 182 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Value with a capital V on Jawhar Jordan in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Myles Jones at pick No. 232 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
You do not let a wide receiver like Isaiah Williams reach the 254th overall pick and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
