The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Barrett Carter, the No. 81 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
Cypress II has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get protection for the quarterback, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
They will replay Xavier Watts at pick No. 69 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyleik Williams in the 82nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Demetrius Knight Jr. was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Taking Barrett Carter in the 143rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Value with a capital V on DJ Campbell in slot 217, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Terrance Ferguson in No. 220, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Fentrell Cypress II at Round 7, Pick 22, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
