You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most.
The Rattler pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Landing Coleman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Jordan Whitehead gives the group a proven body among the projects. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 10th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
The board had Keon Coleman higher than the 34th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Roman Wilson in No. 68, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Spencer Rattler this early at Round 3, Pick 8. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Melton a notch or two before his time. A minor itch, scratched.
Theo Johnson at slot 136 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 182 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Erick All at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Joshua Cephus in the 254th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
