The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Newton. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Nugent pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
They went early on Keon Coleman in the 34th pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 4, where Braden Fiske graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Blake Fisher in pick No. 103, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had cheaper options than Jacob Cowing at the 137th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Josh Newton at No. 180 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A conviction pick on Drake Nugent at pick 193 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Jared Wiley at slot 231 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
