Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Lee has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That Arnold pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Value with a capital V on Terrion Arnold in the 34th overall pick, a genuine coup. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No edge and no loss on Devontez Walker in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Matt Goncalves in No. 103; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Jacob Cowing enough to skip the value, taking him in the 137th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 180 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tanner McLachlan at slot 193 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Matt Lee at pick 231, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
