After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They banked enough surplus on McLachlan to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will need Rouse to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Hit on Jayden Daniels and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
Jayden Daniels at the 9th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nothing to complain about; Brian Thomas Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Patrick Paul in slot 68 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Michael Hall Jr. in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Walter Rouse in the 137th overall pick says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Dwight McGlothern all the way to Round 6, Pick 5, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Mustapha at pick 193 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Tanner McLachlan in pick 231 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
