The rest of the league had time to spare on Jack Westover; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 89 spots ahead at Round 7, Pick 11. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
They took Ladd McConkey at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Johnny Wilson at the 103rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 137 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor itch, scratched.
Jordan Jefferson at pick 180 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Sheridan Jones in Round 6, Pick 18 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Jack Westover in the 231st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
