The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Reaching for Lovett left real value on the table behind him. Mustapha at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Good price on Adonai Mitchell in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dominick Puni at pick 68 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Johnny Wilson in the 103rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fabien Lovett at Round 5, Pick 1 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 180 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
You do not let a safety like Malik Mustapha reach slot 193 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Brevyn Spann-Ford at the 231st pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
