The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If Lee pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Turner.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a passer to set the clock by, even if it was a touch early.
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Dallas Turner at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in the 68th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Javon Baker, who had no business lasting to pick 103. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jarrian Jones in No. 137 is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They liked Justin Rogers enough to skip the value, taking him in the 177th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Tykee Smith here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Jared Wiley in pick 193; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Matt Lee, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
