Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
They will need Coker to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They banked enough surplus on Coleman to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris Braswell. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Keon Coleman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyler Davis in slot 104 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Roger Rosengarten, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Kitan Oladapo in pick 182 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jalen Coker at No. 229 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
