The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Max Melton fell into the 137th pick.
Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. Eboigbe has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
They did well to land Brian Thomas Jr. in slot 34, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Max Melton at the 137th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A safety of that caliber at pick 180 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had cheaper options than Tanner McLachlan at slot 193, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Cornelius Johnson all the way to the 231st pick, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
