After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Bo Nix is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Reaching for Byrd left real value on the table behind him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
A tidy little value on Tyler Guyton in pick No. 34, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Braden Fiske at slot 44 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Devontez Walker in the 68th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach on Jarrian Jones in No. 136; the board had better options right there. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at pick 182. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Solomon Byrd in Round 7, Pick 9, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
