Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Every board in the league had McMahon lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Keon Coleman at the 34th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick 68. It fills a real need, too.
Javon Baker in Round 4, Pick 2 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Justin Eboigbe enough to skip the value, taking him in the 136th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 179 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Value said wait; Dylan McMahon in slot 231 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
