The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Jones at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in No. 34. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and Tyler Nubin was the payoff at pick 51. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Devontez Walker at Round 3, Pick 4 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Blake Fisher, who had no business lasting to slot 84. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Bucky Irving higher than the 104th overall pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jarrian Jones in pick No. 182, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
