Somebody in the 225th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Dwight McGlothern, the No. 175 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in the 27th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Bo Nix went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Adonai Mitchell in slot 37, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Ladd McConkey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 5, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Blake Corum at pick 90 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Renardo Green at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at No. 139 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the 179th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in pick 225, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at Round 7, Pick 11 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
