Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Upton Stout, the No. 189 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 22. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tyler Warren and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value.
A slide stopped in slot 38, with Emeka Egbuka worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They will replay Kenneth Grant at the 44th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: TreVeyon Henderson for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Donovan Jackson at pick No. 76 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in the 77th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Cam Skattebo in pick 145, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Shemar Turner at No. 150 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for CJ West in the 219th pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Carson Vinson at Round 7, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A safety of that caliber at pick 240 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
