Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jared Wilson got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at No. 145. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They will need Ritzie to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nick Emmanwori in the 38th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Quinshon Judkins in No. 69, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Jayden Higgins in pick No. 77, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ozzy Trapilo slid further than he should have, and slot 105 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Jared Wilson all the way to Round 5, Pick 6, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Donovan Edwards still on the board at the Round 7 slot. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Jahvaree Ritzie in pick 222, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Shilo Sanders in pick No. 240 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
