The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Bo Nix, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
They will need Coker to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Hadden.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
Value said wait; Bo Nix in pick 13 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Patrick Paul in slot 53 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Jones at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kamal Hadden at pick No. 179 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached a country mile for Keaton Bills at the 207th pick, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jalen Coker in pick No. 231 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
