The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Every board in the league had Corum lower, and that gap is the story.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Troy Fautanu, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Ladd McConkey at slot 29, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kool-Aid McKinstry slid further than he should have, and pick 33 is lovely value for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Blake Corum a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Luke McCaffrey at the 180th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, JD Bertrand in No. 226. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
