Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jordan Hancock got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 238.
Every board in the league had Campbell lower, and that gap is the story. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
So much rides on Travis Hunter that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Travis Hunter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
In pick 12 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
TreVeyon Henderson at the 104th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joshua Gray. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Dorian Strong in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A wild overpay on DJ Campbell in Round 5, Pick 31, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Jack Kiser was still sitting there in pick No. 217, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Value said wait; Kamren Fabiculanan in No. 220 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Jordan Hancock here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
