Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jalen Milroe got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 83rd overall pick.
Reaching for Nesbit left real value on the table behind him. The veteran additions, Calvin Ridley chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 19 they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
In the 20th pick they get a premier pass rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Isaiah Bond is a better player than Round 2, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Deone Walker in slot 36, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Colston Loveland at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Aireontae Ersery in pick 59 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Jalen Milroe at pick No. 83 is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on DeMonte Capehart in the 125th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jabbar Muhammad in No. 139 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Edwards. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Bryson Nesbit in Round 5, Pick 19 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Shilo Sanders. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jason Henderson at slot 217 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Collin Oliver in the Round 7 slot, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and PJ Williams at the 235th pick is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
