The Patriots' one glaring miss is edge rusher, a need they left exactly as they found it.
However the rest shakes out, Simpson at that price is a win they earned. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Bo Nix in No. 34, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Malachi Corley all the way to pick 68, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ben Sinnott in the 103rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Javon Foster in the 137th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylin Simpson at pick 177 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A quiet steal in the 180th pick: AJ Barner for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Rasheen Ali at slot 193 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Bub Means in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Garret Greenfield at pick No. 231 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
