The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
The Milton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Adonai Mitchell in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Max Melton at pick 82 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Cole Bishop at the 103rd pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Blake Fisher in Round 4, Pick 17; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Theo Johnson at slot 137. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in No. 180, with Malik Mustapha worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tanor Bortolini in No. 193. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Ryan Flournoy at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Kendall Milton still on the board at the 234th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
