The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Sainristil to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will need Wiley to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in Round 2, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Roman Wilson at pick 68 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Mike Sainristil in No. 103 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in the 139th pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jared Wiley in slot 182 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Joshua Cephus at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nothing to complain about; Taulia Tagovailoa went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
