The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
The Davis value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
If DeLoach pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 15 they get the arm they will build around, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
The board had Troy Fautanu higher than the 34th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Keon Coleman at Round 2, Pick 14 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kingsley Suamataia in No. 68. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A quiet steal in the 72nd pick: Xavier Worthy for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Devontez Walker at pick 103 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value with a capital V on Khyree Jackson in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach for Jalyx Hunt in pick No. 137; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Dallin Holker at the 180th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Isaiah Davis in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kalen DeLoach in the 231st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
